Why guests pick this house

Walk to dinner. Soak under the stars. Ski by ten.

Most Boise vacation rentals make you choose between a quiet neighborhood and being close to things. The North End is the rare place where you can leave the car parked all weekend and still be five minutes from downtown.

Three minutes to the foothills

Camel's Back Park sits at the mouth of the Boise foothills trail system. Walk out the door, up the sandy hill, and onto miles of foothills trails before your coffee cools.

Hyde Park is your block

Coffee, a brewery, a wine shop, a toy store, an old-fashioned soda fountain and several of the North End's best restaurants — all on 13th Street — Hyde Park's two-block main street — a short walk away.

A courtyard built for evenings

A private walled courtyard in flagstone and cedar, with a hot tub and a built-in gas fire pit ringed by stone bench seating. It is the part of the house guests write about most.

Bogus Basin in 35 minutes

The ski hill is a straight shot up Bogus Basin Road from the end of the block. Ski a half day, come back, and put your boots by the fire pit.

Actually works for remote work

High-speed internet, a sit-stand desk with an external monitor, and all the bedrooms on a separate floor from the living space.

First time in Boise?

Hyde Park is a place. The North End is the neighborhood around it.

Listings use the two names as if they mean the same thing. They don't — and the difference decides whether you spend your weekend walking or driving. Here is the whole city in one picture.

How Boise is laid out, from the foothills down to the river A schematic north-to-south cross-section of Boise. From the top: Bogus Basin ski area, 35 minutes by car. Below it the Boise Foothills and their trail network. Then the North End neighborhood, which contains Camel's Back Park at its northern edge and Hyde Park at its center, with quiet residential blocks around them. Below the North End is downtown Boise, 5 minutes by car, then the Boise River and Greenbelt, then Boise State University and the airport, about 15 minutes away. Boise runs uphill from the river to the foothills. Hyde Park sits at the walkable center of the North End — trailhead above it, downtown below.

The North End

Boise's oldest residential neighborhood: roughly a hundred blocks of Craftsman bungalows and Victorians under a heavy tree canopy, running north from downtown up to the foothills. It is lovely, and it is almost entirely houses. Most of it has no shops, no restaurants and no coffee within a comfortable walk.

Hyde Park

The two-block stretch of 13th Street at the neighborhood's center — and the only commercial district inside the entire North End. Coffee, dinner, a brewery, a wine shop, a bookstore-quiet bar and an old soda fountain, all in one cluster, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

So "a rental in the North End" can easily mean a beautiful house that is a twenty-minute walk from the nearest cup of coffee. That is the trap worth knowing about before you book anywhere in Boise.

We are a few blocks off 13th Street. That puts Hyde Park's restaurants and shops within a short walk, Camel's Back Park and the foothills trailhead three minutes the other direction, and downtown Boise five minutes by car. Quiet residential street, walkable dinner, and trail access from the front door — that combination exists in maybe a dozen blocks of the whole city.

The location is the whole thing. We walked to coffee every morning and to dinner every night, and never moved the car.

The backyard sold it. Fire pit going, hot tub after a day in the foothills, and complete privacy.
