Boise runs uphill from south to north. The Boise River and the Greenbelt path mark the southern edge of the core. Downtown sits just north of the river. The North End — and Hyde Park at its center — sits above downtown. The foothills rise behind that, with 200-plus miles of trail, and Bogus Basin — Boise's community ski area — is 35 minutes up a road that starts at the top of the neighborhood. South of the river sit Boise State University (five to ten minutes by car) and the airport (about fifteen).

You will want a car for Bogus Basin, the Idaho Shakespeare Festival amphitheater, Snake River Valley wine country, or day trips to McCall — a mountain lake town about two hours north — and the Sawtooth Mountains, about three.

Boise State is roughly five to ten minutes by car depending on game-day traffic. Downtown Boise and Boise Centre are about five minutes. The Boise Airport is about fifteen.
